A $500,000 federal grant administered by the Arkansas Highway Department will start the process to make Saline County’s 124-year-old “Old River Bridge” serviceable again.
On the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge allows passage over the Saline River and was built in 1891. In 1974 it was closed after being damaged by a truck with a too-heavy load of concrete blocks. Continue reading
Lonoke and Washington Counties are slated to add Civil War commemorative historical markers, according to Tom Dupree with the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.
In Washington County, a marker about local Confederate camps before the Battle of Pea Ridge will be placed in downtown Elm Springs. Continue reading
Arkansas has ten new properties on the National Register of Historic Places, according to the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. The new listings are:
• The Servetus W. Ogan House at Wynne in Cross County, a circa 1910 ornamental concrete block building designed in the American Foursquare style of architecture.

Nancy Dane has published “William’s Story,” book two in the historical fiction, Civil War Series for young readers. Dane is a Civil War author and lecturer who lives in Pope County. Her novels and documentary work are used as curriculum in Arkansas schools and colleges.
Although her Civil War Series is aimed at 4th grade and up, Dane reports that “people of all ages are enjoying” her newest book. Continue reading
